France's Prime Minister Lionel Jospin called for a European superstate with standardized criminal law, police and prosecutor. One of the most threatening elements is a demand that relatively freer countries with lower taxes be forced to raise their taxes to meet the high tax and spend socialist policies of nations like France and Germany.
The article said: "One of its tasks would be to "stamp out behaviour detrimental to the general European interest". In a direct attack on Britain, M Jospin said it was necessary to combat "fiscal dumping", the term used on the Continent to describe the low-tax forms of capitalism in Anglo-Saxon countries."
"It is not acceptable for certain member states to practice unfair tax competition in order to attract international investment and the off-shore headquarters of European firms," he said. "Ultimately, the corporate tax system as a whole will have to be harmonised."
Jospin also called for a system of national welfare to bail out nations after they are "obliged to follow the one-size-fits-all monetary policy of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt." --The Telegraph
